What Can I do with a Political Science Degree?
From President to Congressman, Governor to State Senator, Mayor to Municipal Legislator, the world of politics is a great avenue for the well spoken, the passionate, and the good-looking (mostly). The job includes a lot of TV time, a lot of knocking on doors, and a lot of smiles.
A popular option for students eyeing six figures. If you don't mind eighty hour weeks and brushing shoulders with your buddies on Wall Street, this is the career for you. Possibilities include attorney, prosecutor, judge, corporate lawyer, tax attorney, and many others
As much as we would like to pretend, America is not the only kid on the block. For several departments under Homeland Security and the National Security Council, analysts and researchers are in high demand. Surprisingly, the bulk of CIA and MI-6 work is researching the current events and political atmosphere of foreign countries. After all, not everyone can be James Bond.
If you have even an inkling to be around Washington DC pretty much all the time, then Lobbying might be the job for you. Having a solid background in American politics, current legislators, and the Washington press corps makes a POLS major a candidate for a lobbying firm. If you enjoy meeting the rich and powerful regularly, try lobbying.
For the internationally inclined and adventurous of spirit, the US State Department holds a lot of opportunity for travel and exploration. After taking the Civil Service Exam, an aspiring diplomat will be assigned to a developing country at random. MUN peeps are especially welcome.
For those that enjoy looking far, FAR into the future, becoming a professor of political science is the choice for you. Beside being a member of distinguished faculty with publications to your name, you get summers off, go to class three times a week, and love what you learn everyday.
